Share Your Story: Youth Eating Local Initiative

Contributed by Sylvia from Eat Local Cumberland

Hello, my name is Sylvia and I am the Education and Outreach Manager for Eat Local Cumberland. In this role I have developed and just began launching our Youth Eating Local initiative.

We have funding to bring local foods into some schools for students to make healthy smoothies for all of their peers!

We had so much fun at Pugwash District High School, the students did an amazing job over the three days we were there. The blueberries, apples, carrots, spinach and maple syrup were all locally sourced with other ingredients coming from the Pugwash Co-op. Our goal is to introduce young people to local food as a concept and taste experience with focus on the healthy benefits for ourselves, the community and the environment from eating locally!

We have further programming coming up with a larger kitchen/classroom component to teach further of the many benefits to eating healthy, local foods! Our program will be rolling out to Elementary Schools as well in the next few weeks!
