Volunteer Spotlight: Janice (Business Team)

April is Volunteer Month! That’s why we are taking the time to spotlight some of our incredible volunteers and what inspires them to be a part of the Nourish team. This week’s spotlight is all about Janice, a member of our in-house Business Team and engaged Nourish volunteer since the very beginning (almost 10 years!).

Q: Why is Nourish special to you?

Feeding kids has been a passion of mine for many years, as I began co-coordinating a school breakfast program as a volunteer almost 30 years ago. That eventually led to 10 years of health promotion work at the HRCE, that included the establishment of many breakfast programs in HRM, followed by work on the Provincial School Food and Nutrition Policy! Volunteering at NNS in retirement has been a natural extension of this passion!

Q: What work at Nourish that you have been involved with, are you most proud of?

I have enjoyed all of my volunteer time with NNS, but probably I am most proud of being a founding Board Member and part of the team that did the groundwork to establish Nourish as an entity!

Q: What other volunteer work do you do?

I am currently the President of the Dartmouth Curling Club Women’s Division, Chair of the Christ Church Historical Committee, a member of the Church Food Bank Garden Group and a member of a group that is beginning to organize to bring an Ukranian refugee family to Dartmouth. I do like to keep busy!!

Q: What motivates you to continue to volunteer? What is your favourite part of volunteering?

I continue volunteering at NNS for two reasons – I totally believe in our vision, mission and purpose, and because of the respectful organizational values and culture! It is a “good feel” place to volunteer that is making a real difference!
