Let’s #SpeakUp4SchoolFood Nova Scotia!
In just two weeks, Nova Scotians will go to the polls to elect our next provincial government. Now more than ever, Nova Scotians need our government to be a strong voice for our children, communities and local economy.
It’s time to ask your provincial candidates to #SpeakUp4SchoolFood.
This election, Nourish NS and the Coalition for Healthy School Food is asking the Government of Nova Scotia to speak up and hold the federal government accountable to their 2019 budget commitment to co-create a National School Food Program for Canada alongside the provinces and territories.

What can a healthy school food program do for Nova Scotia?
The COVID-19 crisis has revealed that food, and in particular school food, is an essential public good like P-12 education and healthcare. Everyone deserves access to nourishing food in order to be healthy and reach their potential. Healthy school food programs are known to improve students’ diets, school performance, attendance, and social cohesion, regardless of household income. But have you considered what a healthy school food program can do for our economy and the environment? As Nova Scotia recovers from the pandemic our schools are an ideal setting to support local producers through institutional procurement, infrastructure stimulus, job creation and industry renewal. Creating a healthy, just, and sustainable food system that improves food access, while supporting economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic makes sense, yet Canada remains the only G7 country without a National School Food Program.
Together, let’s make a difference in the health and well-being of children and youth in Nova Scotia!
