Easter is a great time for crafting and cooking as a family. This year, our wonderful volunteer Katie and her family decided to try dyeing their Easter Eggs with food - with amazing results!

Ingredients:

1. Beets

2. Frozen cherries

3. Yellow onion skin

4. Turmeric

5. Spinach

6. Hibiscus tea*

7. Purple cabbage

8. Mediterranean Summer Blue tea*

9. Frozen blueberries

10. Coffee

*Try other brightly coloured teas for different results.

Instructions:

Note: You can get creative with whatever you have around, and with the length of time you let the egg soak in the homemade dye. You can also use brown or white eggs, which will yield different results.

  1. Hard boil the eggs and let them cool to room temperature.

  2. Use the following ratios:

    • 4 Cups water mixed with ½ Cup to 1 Cup of the fruit/veggie (depending on how much colour you want).

    • 4 Cups water with 2 Tbsp of ground spice.

  3. Bring the water and food to boil in a pot and simmer for 30-45 minutes.

    • If using ground spice, you may only need to simmer for a few minutes.

    • Make coffee/tea per individual instructions.

  4. Remove from heat and let the dye cool to room temperature.

  5. Pour the dye through a mesh strainer into small bowls or glass jars and stir in 2 Tbsp vinegar.

  6. Let soak anywhere from 3 hours to overnight.

  7. Empty jars and let eggs cool.

Results:

Katie says: “We wanted to leave our eggs overnight to get some deeper colours. We also were a bit liberal with the vinegar, and the ratios weren’t quite right since some of our jars were too small – so some of the eggshells began to crumble and peel – but it just made them look really rustic! We decorated with markers, glitter glue and stickers to top it off.”

Happy Easter from the Nourish team!
