Pizzas and Microgreens at Windsor Junction Summer Camp

Recently, we had the pleasure of being special guests at the Windsor Junction Community Centre’s summer camp. During our visit, we hosted two stations. At one the campers had hands-on youth food skills experience making their pizzas using our new Grow Eat Learn trailer’s pizza oven. At the other, they took part in a garden activity, planting microgreen pots for the campers to take home.

Over 100 campers took part in the day, making this the largest program that Nourish Nova Scotia has ever facilitated. Campers from ages 4-12 had the opportunity to use and engage with the process of making a pizza, from rolling the dough to topping their pizzas in small groups, allowing the youth to try new toppings, including peppers, red onions, mushrooms, cheese, pepperoni, and microgreens The campers got their hands dirty in our microgreen station, where they scooped soil, chose between broccoli, alfalfa, and purple kohlrabi seeds, planted them, and watered them with spray bottles. The youth also had the opportunity to try broccoli microgreens to see what their microgreen pots could grow into.

It was a great day spent with curious and enthusiastic campers. We enjoyed seeing them try new foods, learn about growing their own plants, and take part in each step of making a pizza. Thank you to the Windsor Junction Community Centre for having us, and to all the campers who made the day so enjoyable.
