Access to healthy food is not the same for all. School food programs can help fill the gap.
Well-nourished students are ready to learn, have more energy, and don’t get distracted by hunger. The landscape of school food in Nova Scotia is changing significantly due to increased investment from the provincial government and opportunities to access federal funding. The provincial government provides funding to Nova Scotia public schools for universal free breakfast programs and an emerging pay-what-you-can lunch program. These programs look different in each school based on needs and resources. Nourish Nova Scotia supports school food programs through advocacy, capacity building, resource development and leadership, with the aim to cultivate nutrition knowledge, food skills, and healthy eating practices in young people.
