Meet Alex
This summer and fall, our communications team grew by one! Alex Minard joined us to support what turned out to be a very busy (and fulfilling) season. It was packed with events such as zine-making workshops, film-making workshops, and NourishFest 2025. We truly couldn’t have called these events a success without the many contributions of our staff, interns, and students – including Alex! Read more about Alex and their reflections on youth engagement in food.
What drew you to get involved with Nourish Nova Scotia?
What drew me to get involved with Nourish Nova Scotia was through the ASCEND Program with the Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia, but what got me excited about the opportunity was the hands–on community work and the strong partnerships that Nourish has created.
What is a food story you cherish?
A food story I truly cherish is how my parents always made an effort to include my brother and I in cooking and baking when we were growing up. At the time, I didn’t realize how much patience it must have taken them. I know now that it probably doubled the time it took to get a meal or treat finished. But looking back, I’m so grateful they chose to involve us. Those moments weren’t just about food, they were about spending time together and learning by doing.
How do you see young people helping to influence food systems today?
I see the power in the role that young people can play when it comes to food and the need for experiences that let them learn about where food comes from, how it’s grown, how to prepare it, and how to use it in their daily lives. I believe that young people bring energy, creativity, and new perspectives, and that their voices need to be heard and taken seriously. If we want to see real change in Nova Scotia, we need to give youth more chances to be involved and to lead. Their power needs to be recognized, and their voices amplified so they can help shape a better future.
