Staff Spotlight: Meet Lori
Lori started working at Nourish Nova Scotia in November 2024 as the Fund Development Coordinator. Originally from Labrador City, she moved to Halifax to attend Saint Mary’s University and stayed. Outside of work, she spends her time baking, hiking, and exploring coffee shops with her family. She’s looking forward to being part of the storytelling and growing the support for Nourish Nova Scotia’s programs that allow young people to have positive food experiences.
What drew you to get involved with Nourish?
It’s a short answer – my son asking about the school lunch program and if his school was included. Both my kids have come home from school talking about lunch, how some kids don’t bring lunch with them or how kids were impressed with their homemade lunch and snacks. After looking up the Nourish Nova Scotia website, it was inspiring! I am now part of a wonderful team helping to fund and support youth through food literacy and programming.
What is a food story you cherish?
Growing up, my house was always filled with family and friends enjoying my mom’s homemade cooking. Whether it was a traditional Newfoundland turkey dinner, snowballs, cherry cake or my favourite peach chicken, I cherish each of these memories with the people who were at the table. My mom passed along a love of cooking and baking to me that I now share with my boys.
Saturdays at the Farmers Market when my kids were young is a time I cherish – watching them learn where food comes from, and then enjoying local food together. Eating crepes and wraps, buying local bacon from the German butcher, and getting our bottled milk with a side of free gelato for the boys!
How do you see young people helping to influence food systems today?
By empowering them to be part of the conversation. When young people have a chance to learn about food literacy, attend and be a part of programs, find out how to access local foods or grow gardens, they gain lifelong food skills that can be shared between generations.
Is there anything you love to grow or cook?
This dish is not on my list of must-eats or what I like to cook, but it’s the most loved and requested food by my family - lamb shepherd’s pie! I’d rather spend my time baking, especially gingerbread loaf during the holidays and a daily batch of muffins for school.
