Pride in School Food for All
As June comes to a close, it signals the end of Pride month, a time to celebrate and support 2SLGBTQIA+ folks and learn about their history. Pride also serves as a stark reminder of the many challenges 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals—including queer and trans youth—face, including discrimination at home, work and school, unstable housing, and lower overall incomes.
Amidst these disparities, food insecurity, or the lack of consistent access to safe, nourishing and culturally appropriate food, is a major concern for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. Access to food at school in a safe and non-stigmatizing way is crucial support for queer and trans youth.
You can support school food for all throughout the year by:
Joining Nourish in advocacy efforts for a universal national school food program
Contacting your local school to volunteer at a breakfast program
Learning more about the intersections of food and identity from organizations like the Queer Food Foundation
*2SLGBTQIA+ is an acronym for Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual, where the plus reflects the many additional gender and sexual identities.
