A word from our previous Food and Film Challenge winner
Every year Nourish Nova Scotia invites young filmmakers in Nova Scotia to creatively explore and share their unique stories about food based on the theme of Devour! The Food Film Fest.
The winner of the 2024 Youth Food and Film Challenge, Audrey Taylor, created a film based on the Karma Closet, a student-led lunch program at Northumberland Regional High School.

What was your favourite part of the film challenge?
I think my favourite part of the film challenge was diving back into the history of the Karma Closet because I’ve obviously known the like, the story of how the Karma Closet came to be, but doing this, I got to dive way deeper into that, and I thought that was really nice.
What inspired you to make your video and share your food story?
Part of the thing that inspired me to make the video was actually Miss B. telling me about this contest and being like, “Someone should make a video about the Karma Closet, because we would fit really well into that topic.” And I was like, “I love the Karma Closet. Like, this is one of my favourite things at the whole school. I will absolutely do this.”
How do you see young people helping to influence food systems today?
I feel like the Karma Closet is such a good example of this because we have a whole bunch of people who are so passionate about getting food to students and helping to curb food security. I think we have grown so much more than I was ever expecting, and so much has happened to the Karma Closet, like this video and the Prime Minister visiting. I never would have believed it if you told my grade nine self this would happen, but it has. So many schools have been taking inspiration from us, which is insane. It’s also insane to think that we helped inspire this free food program that’s now across the province.

There’s still time to enter a film for this year’s challenge!
