It is considered one of the five pillars of Islam and is observed with great reverence and devotion. During this month, Muslims fast from dawn until dusk, avoiding food and water, among other things.

February 1st marks African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia. There are 52 historic African Nova Scotian communities, dating back over 200 years. African Heritage Month is a time to recognize the tremendous legacy of African Nova Scotians, past and present.

With mental health at the forefront of many of our minds this week, we thought it would be a good time to look at the important connection between the food we eat and our mental health.

Champions of school food programs cheered on Wednesday when the interim deputy minister of education told MLAs on the public accounts committee that Nova Scotia is “actively working on the development of a universal lunch program that would be free to all children, universally available.”

The Local Food Lunch Toolkit is a collection of recipes, tools and resources to make serving wholesome, nutritious, from-scratch meals using local ingredients a breeze for busy food service professionals and families alike.

As global food costs increase due to high inflation, we are all feeling the effects at grocery stores and restaurants across the country. Our local food growers are feeling it too—from gas to seeds to fertilizer, the cost of growing food in Nova Scotia is also on the rise.
