100 School Eats

School / Community: Baddeck Academy

At Baddeck Academy, we have a number of wonderful healthy programs going on!  Here is a picture of one of them.  In Grade One, once a month we have “Veggie & Dip Days”.  Parents are asked to donate vegetables and dip.  Generally, different types of veggies are chosen, so students get to try (and realize they like), such as raw turnip, radish, cauliflower, multi-colored peppers, etc.  Different dips include hummus and guacamole, as well as some store bought dips.
We also have a breakfast program, which is run by teachers, parents and students.  Also, our Parent Group, (generally for 2 months in the fall and 2 months in the spring) provide a healthy recess once per week to all elementary students.
On top of that, each spring we have a “Health & Wellness Fair” day.  It is run for the full day, for the full school (P-12).  It is an incredible, fun day for both staff & students!  We golf, step dance, play rugby, walk, learn to run, hip hop, zumba, etc.  AND we eat super healthy!  There are snack rotations that have kale chips, quinoa salads, hummus, guacamole and tons of fresh fruit & veggies!
Last, but not least, we just applied for, and were accepted for, a School Garden Grant!  We can’t wait to get planting!  Three classes have started vermi-composting and this spring we will be planting vegetables and herbs in our nutrient dense soil and selling them at the market and hopefully planting some seedlings in our new garden!
